Living Labs
ComTech Lab

Secure and intelligent networks — from quantum communications to advanced AI-driven applications.

We design, analyse and test communication networks and applications for industry, municipalities and public institutions, with a focus on security, quantum-safe communications and AI.

ComTech Lab is the research laboratory of the Network Technologies and Applications group at the Department of Telecommunications, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, VSB – Technical University of Ostrava. Led by Prof. Miroslav Vozňák, Ph.D., the group delivers the Communication and Information Technologies study programme and trains the next generation of network and security engineers through student involvement in research.

Research focus

Our research focuses on secure communication infrastructure and the intelligent applications built on it. Key areas include:

  • Quantum-safe communication networks: QKD network architecture, key management and integration with post-quantum cryptography
  • Beyond-5G and 6G wireless systems, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, advanced multiple access in 6G, non-terrestrial and UAV-assisted networks
  • Physical-layer and covert communication security
  • Programmable, software-defined networks with guaranteed QoS/QoE
  • IoT and smart-city data platforms from sensor to edge and cloud
  • Trustworthy AI for voice, image, video and sensor data, including deepfake and fraud detection
  • Technologies for defence, public safety and emergency services, developed in direct cooperation with the Czech Armed Forces, the Fire and Rescue Service and the Police of the Czech Republic

Industry
Services & Equipment

ComTech Lab offers collaborative research, testing and validation, pilot deployments and expert consultancy in secure communication networks and advanced applications.

Our infrastructure includes quantum key distribution (QKD) links and a QKD network simulator, communication secured with post-quantum cryptography, a private 5G campus network, software-defined networking and SDR testbeds, LoRaWAN infrastructure and on-premise AI compute.

We work with industry, municipalities and public authorities, including the Czech Armed Forces, the Integrated Rescue System and national cybersecurity bodies.

Our cooperation includes:

5G/6G & Wireless Systems

Performance analysis, optimisation and experimental testing of advanced wireless systems in our private 5G network and SDR testbeds. Topics include reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS/STAR-RIS), NOMA and rate-splitting multiple access, short-packet and covert communications, joint radar-communication, satellite-UAV-terrestrial networks and physical-layer security. mmWave capabilities are being added.

AI-based decision support in clinical settings, such as evaluation of intraoperative X-ray images of breast tissue for surgical margin assessment, and speech-based health diagnostics.

Computer vision and vision-language models for automated inspection and monitoring in transport and critical infrastructure. Examples include automatic visual inspection of urban rail vehicles, anomaly detection in tram interior CCTV, and AI-based protection of critical infrastructure components against theft and damage.

We work directly with security forces and first responders. For the Czech Armed Forces we develop AI-based processing and fusion of image and sensor data from UAV swarms (DECOSIS, TA ČR defence research). For the Fire and Rescue Service we develop localisation and AI-based situational awareness of firefighters in large GPS-denied buildings (IZ SAFE, Ministry of the Interior). We also provide security analysis of mobile and IP networks for law enforcement, and our QKD network emulation platform has been demonstrated to the National Cyber and Information Security Agency (NÚKIB). We offer feasibility studies, prototype development and field validation.

Identification of devices and their operating states from power-consumption signatures using neural networks. Applications include energy management, predictive maintenance and detection of unauthorised or anomalous devices.

Pilot deployments and testing of IoT solutions on our city-scale LoRaWAN infrastructure (lora.vsb.cz), including hybrid LoRaWAN/NB-IoT connectivity, scalable containerised IoT concentrators and edge computing. We help municipalities and companies turn sensor data into decisions, for example through data platforms for optimising municipal infrastructure.

Design and testing of virtualised and programmable network architectures, including VXLAN-based overlay networks, network segmentation, traffic engineering and automation. We evaluate quality of service and quality of experience for real-time voice and video services, including machine-learning models that predict video quality under varying encoding and network conditions.

Design, simulation and evaluation of QKD networks and their integration into existing infrastructures. We focus on key management systems, standardised key-delivery interfaces (ETSI GS QKD 004/014), hybrid QKD and post-quantum cryptographic schemes, and quantum-safe services such as 5G roaming. We develop QKDNetSim, an open-source QKD network emulator for ns-3 used by engineers, researchers and educators, and operate a real cross-border QKD link.

Detection of synthetic (deepfake) speech, robustness testing of speaker verification and voice biometrics against spoofing and voice cloning, and protection against vishing and phishing. Our IP telephony infrastructure serves as a realistic testbed for evaluating attacks and countermeasures on real voice channels. We also develop tools that disrupt phishing campaigns.
