The project focuses on the development of a novel therapeutic strategy for severe pneumonia and other inflammatory diseases using chemotaxis-guided micro/nanorobots. These multifunctional nanorobots will be equipped with chemokine receptors enabling them to navigate towards sites of inflammation and perform targeted therapeutic functions, including the elimination of bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and scavenging of danger-associated molecular patterns. Their effectiveness will first be evaluated using a 3D human lung organoid model and subsequently tested for efficacy and safety in an animal model of pneumonia.
The project aims to provide a proof of concept for an innovative, non-antibiotic approach to treating severe bacterial infections and inflammation, addressing the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
